Accuse Billy Joe Shaver of anything you like. Just don't say his heart's not in it. Since the last time he came through town, the honky-tonk troubadour has had quadruple bypass surgery, and endured the deaths of both his wife and son Eddy, with whom he'd recorded for 15 years. Freedom's Child (Compadre) hardly shows him taking it easy, telling tales in the weather-beaten voice that made him an early favorite of '70s Nashville (especially Waylon Jennings). The title track and a remake of Shaver's own "Good Ol' U.S.A." laud the country Shaver loves "plumb down to the ground" with passion and humor (sample lyric: "We got faith in the Lord/ We got Chevrolets and Fords"), while "That's Why the Man in Black Sings the Blues" admits we've still got a lot to work on, paying tribute to Shaver's contemporary Johnny Cash in the bargain. The sparse "Day by Day" addresses Shaver's loss directly, with its portrait of a father falling "to his knees on the ground" and being raised up by faith, but the album is more full of wisdom than sorrow, tinged with the knowledge that the two usually walk hand in hand.
