Brother JT

Maybe it was inevitable that John Terlesky, the titular JT of the Brother JT franchise (JT & Vibrolux, Brother JT, Brother JT3), would turn to God. Living one's life in the little steel town of Bethlehem, Pa., just a stone's throw from Nazareth and Emmaus, can set a man to pondering the nature of holiness. When his old band, Original Sins, gave up the ghost in the late '90s, JT was ostensibly left with more time to devote to his clerical, acid-folky alter-ego. While his onstage persona has always veered eerily close to that of dervish, JT made the connection official with his 2002 release, Spirituals (Drag City). A collection of originals and traditionals 'bout gettin' closer to thee, Spirituals is a pilgrimage into the stranger recesses of Terlesky's psyche. You'd assume this venture is undertaken tongue-in-cheek, but it's hard to know for sure.
