November 27-December 3, 2002 mixpicks World AIDS DayBy the year 2022, experts predict that 70 million people worldwide will have died from AIDS. Yet, rather than simply getting swept away by the suffocating statistics, deny yourself something -- namely, your artistic privileges -- for the sake of World AIDS Day. The Philadelphia AIDS Fund, in conjunction with the University City Arts League and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, will hold "A Day Without Art" in commemoration of those who have lost their lives and for those who continue to fight in the struggle against HIV and AIDS. The University City Arts League will drape a black cloth over their signature banner and invite the community to join "in a quiet gesture by taking a moment to pause and reflect." The Art Museum will host a day of informative events and a candlelight vigil in the hope of uniting adults and children in the slow fight against stigmas and discrimination. The museum will also have "A Mother's Pledge Presentation," where a group of moms who have either lost a child or children to AIDS, or who have a child or children currently living with HIV, turn over a quilt piece to a representative of the Quilt Project. "A Day Without Art" is a time to appreciate the memories made with those that have passed on and celebrate the lives of those who continue to persevere. Sun., Dec. 1.
