November 21-27, 2002 mixpicks Phil Automaton Pre-partySince a parade is quite possibly the most direct form of expression in the public sphere, what better way to select its participants than to let the people choose? In this spirit, Mattyboy Hart decided that it would be "rock 'n' roll" to hold a plebiscite in order to determine what sorts of spectacles to include in Spiral Q Puppet Theater's New Year's Eve procession. "Phil Automaton: Kinetic Art Procession and Public Art Spectacle" will take place Dec. 31 through Old City, but this weekend, it's up to you to decide what you'll see that night. On Sunday, the Painted Bride will host a veritable voting spectacular -- ultra-democratically inclusive and free as a bird -- complete with food, beer, a DJ -- and stickers. Each guest gets five stickers with which to choose the best proposals for "larger-than-life moving sculptures and parade autonoma," submitted by everyone from art collectives to community bike groups. (If you hurry, you too may be considered for one of the cash awards being offered to five artists or groups.) Ain't democracy grand?
