November 7-13, 2002 musicpicks Jerry Douglas
By the time resonator guitarist extraordinaire Jerry Douglas takes the stage with his equally legendary acoustic guitar cohort Doc Watson, the suspense will be over. We will know if justice has prevailed and Douglas has been officially proclaimed instrumentalist of the year by the Country Music Association. Douglas is the soloist on the Down from the Mountain Tour, a member of Alison Krauss' touring band and lender of acoustic growl to over 1,000 recordings. If you've heard something on country radio with a slide, odds are it was JD. His latest solo work, Lookout for Hope (Sugar Hill), lets him range from his bluegrass beginnings to rock/jazz/fusion. Douglas does it all. Now, if only he could get the elder statesman of acoustic pickers, Doc Watson, featured on the Country Countdown, then Doc could look forward to the popularity his graceful playing deserves. Watson has been wowing the folk circuit for 40 years now. Surely a little exposure in the right places would make followers of the same folks who fell hard for O Brother. Fri., Nov. 8, 8 p.m., $29.50-$34, with Doc Watson, Keswick Theatre, 291 Keswick Ave., Glenside, 215-572-7650.
