Cato Salsa Experience/ The Soundtrack of Our Lives

This show's got the earmarks of a retro-blowout, a psychedelic white sale. Yet Norway's Cato Salsa and Sweden's Soundtrack both manage to avoid the obvious with sandblasting, careening collaged elements to make their moody mod-ness modern. Titles like "Listen To Me Daddy'O" and "Time To Freak Out!" are misleading -- Cato is the bolder, brasher band here, thrashing powerfully and hyperactively through needle-in-the-red rhythms, distorted screams and heavy guitars on A Good Tip for a Good Time (Emperor Norton). Luckily, they stop the fuzztone freak-fest long enough to find anthemic melodies ("So, the Circus Is Back in Town," "Got Soul if You Want It") that Jon Spencer would kill for. Since 1998's Welcome to the Infant Freebase, The Soundtrack of Our Lives has made loud Zep/Doors-esque mood-music, punctured with Syd Barrett-squalor and big dollops of melody that make it substantial. Bigger in its crackling six-string pronouncements than previous outings, Behind the Music (Universal) continues that weird ride inside the gold mine, fortifying singer Ebbot Lundberg and guitarist Ian Person's position as ZoSo-ers for the new age.

Tue., Nov. 5, 9 p.m., $13-$15, with Citizen Bird, The Khyber, 56 S. Second St., 215-569-9700
