Robert Randolph

Playing the steel guitar is as close as you can get to singing without opening your mouth, and when Robert Randolph plays, it's a full-throated shout. It wasn't long ago that to hear the 24-year-old play, you'd have to go to services at House of God Pentecostal in Orange, N.J. But Randolph, who takes the stage looking more like a hip-hop star than the big-hatted fellas you normally associate with his instrument, has become something of a sensation in the past couple of years, piling up accolades and guesting with artists who've been selling out theaters longer than he's been alive. (The Blind Boys of Alabama, who know a thing or two about blissful sounds, tapped Randolph and his Family Band to accompany them on their latest record.) Live at the Wetlands (Warner Bros.) hints at a ferocious live presence, but you keep wishing Randolph and co. would take a few more chances with the jam-band idiom. (The popping funk bass is an annoyance, and the Southern boogie of "Shake Your Hips" is the Allman Brothers refried one time too many.)

Robert Randolph & The Family Band, Thu., Oct. 31, 8 p.m., $20-$22, with Yohimbe Brothers, The TLA, 334 South St., 215-336-2000.
