Grant Hart

He wrote some of Hüsker Dü's most memorable songs, but Grant Hart's post-Dü career has been slow, marred by heroin addiction, touring accidents, label hassles and living in the shadow of ex-bandmate Bob Mould. Hart quickly rebounded after the band's break-up with a solo record, Intolerance, and some mind-blowing singles. Nova Mob, his next band, was less successful and Hart has since returned to solo work, releasing Good News For Modern Man in 1999 and playing on Patti Smith's latest album. Good News was largely ignored, but the album contains some of Hart's best work in years. The youngest songwriter on the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame's list of the "500 Greatest Songs Defining the Genre" (for Hüsker Dü's "Turn on the News") is not quite ready to sink into bitterness -- or electronica -- anytime soon.

Sat., Nov. 2, 8 p.m., $10, with Wise and Foolish Builders and Action Plus, The Balcony, 1003 Arch St., 215-922-LIVE.
