Shellac

With so many over-the-counter urban record store myths being trafficked so frequently, it's hard to believe any of them are based in reality. Well, it looks like the impossible has happened: Shellac of North America (a.k.a. Shellac) is mounting its most extensive tour of the East Coast to date. Few bands have garnered so much attention for doing as little press and touring as this Windy City trio, and this outing is no different. As usual, the band is booking the tour itself and, instead of playing Philly, it is taking its dog and pony show across the river (well, many rivers) to Oh! Hara's Pub in Gloucester City, N.J. Though the decision drastically limits the number of people able to see the gig, it's very much in line with the band's penchant for finding new and unusual show settings, from bowling alleys and elementary school multipurpose rooms to a strip club for obscenely overweight, elderly strippers who crush beer cans with their breasts. The band's principals make no bones about the their less-than-formulaic approach to standard music practices (i.e. the album-tour-album-tour cycle) and who cares? When Todd Trainer kicks up a dust storm behind the drums, Steve Albini lets loose shards of guitar dissonances and Bob Weston seals the deal with his nimble bass rumbles you'll understand why they may be the world's greatest garage band.

Tue., Oct. 15, 7:30 p.m., $8, all ages, with Danielson Famile, Oh! Hara’s Pub, 22 N. King St., Gloucester City, N.J., 856-456-2104.
