Bellini

After Don Caballero's last tour, tensions in the group finally took their toll and drummer Damon Che ended up a man without a band. Meanwhile, across the Atlantic in Catania, Sicily, Giovanna Cacciola and Agostino Tilotta put their band, Uzeda, to rest. I think you can see where this is going. The above-mentioned parties, along with bassist Matthew Taylor, retreated to Che's Pennsylvania farmhouse and emerged as Bellini, the mother of all math rock bands. OK, that's a little grand and facetious, but Bellini does bear some resemblance to early math rock favorites like Breadwinner, Bastro and Yona-Kit. However, the similarities are made moot when you factor in that a) Che may be one of the best drummers for this kind of music out there, b) Tilotta is no slouch on guitar and c) Cacciola's yelpy, spoken-song style bears a resemblance to Ari Up of The Slits (a good thing). All of these aspects make the band's debut, Snowing Sun (Monitor) a pretty bombastic and unrelenting listen. Though it's a fine debut, hopefully Bellini will ease up on the throttle just a tad.

Sun., Oct. 13, 9 p.m., $7, with Tekulvi, The Common Cold, Robbers, The Khyber, 56 S. Second St., 215-238-5888.
