October 10-16, 2002 artpicks Romantic Evening
Romance novels make up over half of the popular paperback fiction sold in North America. Last year the quick-to-produce books (2,143 published in 2001) made $1.5 billion. Still, bodice-rippers remain the black sheep of the literary family. In fact, some would object to the use of the word "literary" at all in connection with romance novels. Not Isabel Swift. She's the editorial chief at Harlequin Enterprises (the world's largest and most prolific publishers of romance fiction), and she's coming to town as part of the Penn Humanities Forum's "Year of the Book" program to argue for romance's place in the literary world. Expect Swift to shoot down the most common notions about romance fiction: that the books have no substance, that one is indecipherable from the other, and that they have no place among "educated" readers. If you're still not convinced, be warned before you heckle her: Swift probably knows hundreds of ways to call you a certain part of the male anatomy. Isabel Swift, “The Substance of Romance,” Wed., Oct. 16, 5-6:30 p.m., 200 College Hall, Locust Walk between 34th and 35th sts. Registration required, 215-573-8280.
