October 10-16, 2002 artpicks The Other Van DammeHe may or may not kickbox, but like Belgium's other big unbrewed export, Joseph van Damme (his stage name, José van Dam, stems from his early years in France) is a major star boasting endurance and screen credits. One of the era's greatest classical vocalists, van Dam basically owned the world franchise on Carmen's "Toreador" and Wagner's Flying Dutchman for decades. At 62, his gorgeous voice has grayed a bit, but his bass-baritone retains remarkable musicianship and expressive powers. Van Dam acted so well as the comic servant Leporello in Joseph Losey's literally and figuratively wiggy 1979 Don Giovanni film that he became perhaps the only opera singer since the 1940s to star in a watchable "straight" movie, the 1988 French art house hit The Music Teacher. Though not a special anniversary, it's a big year in Philly for the music of Robert Schumann, one of Romanticism's major league Tortured Young Geniuses with Great Tunes. Van Dam, also acclaimed for skill in song, presents two of Schumann's contrasting cycles, Zwölf Gedichte (Twelve Poems) and the magnificently lyrical Dichterliebe (A Poet's Love). José van Dam with Maciej Pikulski (piano), Wed., Oct. 16, 8 p.m, $22, Philadelphia Chamber Music Society at the Kimmel Center, 260 S. Broad St., 215-893-1999.
