October 10-16, 2002 artpicks Streetwise Swan Lake
Swan Lake is among the most familiar of all classical ballets. But anyone who goes to see Birdbrain because it's based on this poetic ode to romanticism is in for a surprise. The dancers, dressed in T-shirts and pants, perform moves that are an amalgam of hip-hop, jazz dance and gymnastics, and the soundtrack combines Tchaikovsky and electronica. It's not your mother's Swan Lake. And that's precisely why Randy Swartz, director of Dance Celebration, is so hyped up about Birdbrain kicking off his NextMove Series at the Annenberg Center. As he notes, this series is all about "rattling our aesthetics." Presented by the Australian Dance Theatre, the piece takes Swan Lake's themes and choreographic phrases on a kinetic thrill ride. According to Swartz, "it's a non-stop 75-minute work that races in front of you... This is commando-type dance." Dance fans can appreciate Birdbrain as a refreshing interpretation of a time-honored work, yet Swartz says he is also aiming to attract twentysomethings who would not ordinarily attend a dance concert. "I'm hoping to bring out a different group of people who will understand the music and the movement and maybe be seduced by the art form." Birdbrain, Tue., Oct. 15, 7:30 p.m., $28-$33, Zellerbach Theatre at the Annenberg Center, 3680 Walnut St., 215-898-3900.
