The Blind Boys of Alabama/ The Dirty Dozen Brass Band

Proof that it's possible to respect tradition without shutting your eyes to the world, The Blind Boys of Alabama and The Dirty Dozen Brass Band -- who play the Keswick together Friday night -- find the past in the present, and the present in the past. On Higher Ground (Real World), the Blind Boys, backed by 24-year-old N.J. pedal steel whiz Robert Randolph and his band, make a joyful noise whether they're belting out gospel classics or essaying songs by Stevie Wonder, Curtis Mayfield, Jimmy Cliff and Prince. (They even go so far as to meld Funkadelic's "You and Your Folks, Me and My Folks" with the 23rd Psalm.) The mixture doesn't always jell -- and why does Ben Harper keep sticking his nose into more talented people's studios? -- but the moments of rapture are worth sitting through the occasional lesson.

Though still keeping their feet in boisterous New Orleans parade music, the Dirty Dozen -- who, incidentally, are currently a nine-piece -- pay tribute to their hometown on Medicated Magic (Ropeadope/Atlantic) by cooking up a zesty sonic gumbo with the help of guest chefs Norah Jones, Olu Dara, Dr. John, DJ Logic and the ubiquitous Randolph. Too many cooks? Sometimes. But as they sing on the opening track, "It ain't nothing but a party," so if something gets spilled, just keep dancing.

Fri., Oct. 4, 8 p.m., $29.50, Keswick Theatre, Easton Rd. and Keswick Ave., Glenside, Pa., 215-572-7650.
