Rudy Adrian

New Zealand sound designer Rudy Adrian is of two minds: the atmospherically abstract and the sequencer-rhythmic focused. Either way, the effect is serenely spacey sonic exploration -- and how could it not be since Adrian does soundtracks for planetariums? He warps and winds his layered laconic synth-sounds in slow improvisational fashion through cautious, distant melodies and minimalist mood shifts with the aid of processed vocals and, on occasion, Baroque wood flute. What may amaze audiences most about the live show is that Adrian will use one keyboard, a Yamaha SY77 and one Kurzweil sampler. No pre-recorded audio or dense layers of computer-driven sequences. Most everything he'll do at The Gathering will be live, based on chance meetings and risky improvisation, and lovely without breaking mood or stride.

Sat., Sept. 21, 8 p.m., $10-$20, presented by The Gathering, St. Mary’s Hamilton Village, 3916 Locust Walk, Penn Campus, 1-800-965-4827.
