Broad Street Broadside

Do you have what it takes to create the world's biggest print? Mightiest ad? Largest broadside? As part of the Philadelphia Print Collaborative's citywide fest "Image & Print: A Contemporary Conversation with History," a hopeful hundred or so Philadelphia artists and students will participate in an ink-and-steamroller 200-foot broadside; a printmaking image-and-text totem that was, in its time, as powerfully informative and crucial to free speech as CNN or the Internet. The Image & Print festival presents the broadside in historical context (William Penn's press images, the mass distribution of the Declaration of Independence, abolitionist assembly meetings, political cartoons) then and now. After the broadside is finished, the Spiral Q Puppet Theater will promenade the print down Broad to the University of the Arts, where (in Hamilton Hall) there'll be a tropicalia ball where the samba sounds of Amor Tropical, Argo and 99 meet images of protest and cheer.

Broad Street Broadside, Sun., Sept. 22, (rain date Oct. 6), Broad and Spruce sts., noon to 4 p.m., reception 4-6:30 p.m., Hamilton Hall, University of the Arts, 320 S. Broad St., 215-557-8433.
