Feria del Barrio

More than a neighborhood street party, Feria del Barrio is an invitation to the rest of the city to see how this section of Latinolandia relaxes with the family. This Sunday, Fifth Street above Lehigh will be crowded with folks sampling a wide range of Latin cooking, browsers at community groups' info booths and kids playing games, getting their faces painted and making chalk art on the street. On a nearby stage the width of the street, check out performances by Rumberos de la Cinco, who mix students and faculty from the Asociación de Músicos Latino-Americanos (AMLA) on traditional tunes, and Taller Puertorriqueño's Coqui Dancers, who offer hip-hop Latin-style. And now the music: pan-Latain supergroup Viva Quetzal headlines the Feria. Sax and panpipes, electric guitar and cuatro, bass, drum kit and all the hand percussion imaginable take on the music of the Americas at 4 p.m. The day closes with merengue from local faves, The Brothers Band. Throughout the day, listen for other top local acts like Grupo Fuego, Trio Bayama, Latin Playboys and Los Pleneros del Batey.
