September 5-11, 2002 mixpicks Lighting the WayGoing further for the arts is the mark of a true professional -- and even more striking when one sort of artist guides another through a lean period. When Lantern Theater Co. started looking ahead to this looming season, it didn't take long for Debbie Miller, director at Gallery 911 and a Lantern member for the past eight years, to start looking for a way to help out. This Friday, Miller will chair a silent auction at 911 of nearly 160 works of art, all in aid of the well-loved theater -- a gesture made even more altruistic by the fact that gallery owner Dennis Giudici has handed over many of his own collection pieces for the sale. Included for purchase will be an etching by Salvador Dalí of Robert Oppenheimer, appearing with an angel -- a piece which delivers a clearly ideological message -- as well as more decorative pieces, such as brass figurines of animals with jeweled details, dating from the 1920s. For true Lantern supporters, the watercolor by Joe Barker of the company's home, St. Stephen's Theater, will also be eligible for a bid, in addition to a live painting that Barker will execute on the night. The whole evening is capped off by a candlelight reception, where you can bask in the glow of your new purchase, not to mention enjoying helping with such a cooperative effort. Light the Lights!, reception and silent auction to benefit Lantern Theater Co., Fri., Sept. 6, 6-9:30 p.m., Gallery 911 at Revsin, 911 Arch St., 215-922-5583, www.revsin.com.
