Book Show

The great thing about the Fringe Festival is that there's something for everyone. Feeling angsty? Go watch Sideshow Bennie roll around on glass for awhile, it'll lift your spirits. Feeling silly? Clown around with Hotel Obligado. Feeling thirsty and ambivalent? Go have a beer at the Hub and watch whatever the cabaret throws at ya. And of course, every Fringe there are shows that seem to defy categorization. Brian Rudnick's Book Show is one of them. Rudnick operated a book stand in the Reading Terminal Market in the late '80s, and has, over the years, amassed a considerable collection of rare books and literary oddities. At Fringe, he will show off pieces from his collection, sure to please bookworms everywhere. His selection ranges from cool-because-it's-old (the Philadelphia Public Ledger Almanac of 1890) to funny-because-it's-bizarre (Entertaining with Insects) to not-sure-whether-it's-funny-or-scary (The Shortest Way with the Jews). Rudnick, who also dabbles in light and sound design for local theaters, was inspired to go public after his show-and-tell parties at his home were enthusiastically received. His Fringe debut is sure to put Reading Rainbow to shame.

Book Show, Thu., Sept. 5, 7 p.m.; Fri., Sept 6, 8 p.m. and Sat., Sept. 14, 2 p.m., The Muse Gallery, 60 N. Second St., 215-627-5310.
