Bands like Le Tigre take a lot of shit for not being Sleater-Kinney. Less skilled musically, more obvious lyrically, tons more abrasive and perhaps a little less cute, Kathleen Hanna's electronic-minded rock outfit will never feel the warm, arbitrary embrace of music critics the way that other Olympia-spawned grrl-punk trio has. Well fuck 'em. You can hear it in the way Hanna purposely rubs you the wrong way with those cacophonous, sung-spoken vocals: She does not care what record-collecting fanboys think of her. Still, she's a woman of the Aughties. Where Hanna's old band -- the loud and proud '90s undergroundlings Bikini Kill -- tried to rock your socks off, Le Tigre's all about getting you to kick off your shoes and dance to drum machine beats. The songs are still fierce, feminist anthems, but it's more middle finger than fist in the air.
