August 15-21, 2002 beat box
Yes, yes y’all, ESPN and the infamous X-Games have landed. Yeah, Love Park is a tad bit F’d up and the skate kids have started to wear down the City Hall courtyard in retribution, but hey, the parties have landed, too … Got X-Games on the brain? Get X-treme on the dance floor at the official X Party -- Philthy with DJs Jazzy Jeff, Rob Paine, Kenny Meez and Dave Pianka. Thu., Aug. 15, Shampoo, 215-922-7500, 9 p.m.-2 a.m., $15. Once again it's Audiogliphix Magazine, the champion of Philly and beyond's hot, hot, good shit, music and more's Audio August party. This week boasts Apphillyated TV in the house doing auditions for their new show -- get ya host on while DJs Jorge, King Paramour and Freddie Beats spin. Fri., Aug. 16, Saint Jack's, 45 S. Third St., www.agmusicmag.com, 9 p.m.-2 a.m., $Free! And DJ K-Swizzle, a.k.a. mag founder and record wrecker K-C Bajai. Ropeadope Records. Yeah, you know, the recording home of The Philadelphia Experiment, Scratch, DJ Logic and more. Yes, they have the supercalifragisexy gear, too. Well don't look now, they've opened a gallery and are flying in Heavyweight (www.hvw8.com) from Montreal for a live music-inspired installation. It's Ropeadope and Heavyweight: Sound and Vision. After Friday's invite-only soiree, the doors open on Saturday with dope beats spinning round and round from the one and only Scratch Ma.Kan.iks, DJs Excel, Jay-Ski, Sat-One, Adam-Bomb and Kwestion. Sat., Aug. 17, The Ropeadope Gallery at The Media Bureau, 725 N. Fourth St., 1-6 p.m., $Free! Squarebiz and The Remedy present ... scratch, cut, wicky wicky, ficky ficky ... The Magnificent album release party with, of course, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Kenny Dope (of Masters at Work), Spinna and Cosmo Baker on the wheels of steel. Speaking of Will Smith’s main man, the music world should be waiting for the release of Jazzy Jeff’s album, The Magnificent. While critics dish this way and that way and name drop J-Live, Jill Scott and Boyz II Men’s Shawn Stockman (wait, I take that back -- Shawn rips this track in a totally anti-Boyz fashion), it’s Baby Blak, Pauly Yamz, The Last Emperor, Chef and many more that are due credit. But see for yourself and check the party hosted by the always-sexy Yameen and Pauly Yamz (hint: someone’s getting on the mic). Mon., Aug. 19, Fluid, 613 S. Fourth St., 9 p.m.-2 a.m., $10.
Open mic hogs, this week’s Frequency is all open mic. Sign-ups commence at 9 p.m. with DJ Phillee Blunt on the ones and twos alongside live musicians. Get down, get down. Tue., Aug. 20, Soul Sanctuary, 722 Arch St., 215-413-9900, phillyfrequency@yahoo.com, 9 p.m.-2 a.m., $5. Did I miss anything? Maybe so, but it wasn't as good as any of the above. Ha, until next week.
