Take Two

Philadelphia artist Ellen Powell Tiberino died prematurely at age 54, but her unique talent and style had already influenced scores of local artists. To celebrate her legendary life, an ensemble of family and friends recently mounted a multimedia, dual-venue exhibition, titled "Community Callings: Ellen Powell Tiberino Visits the Bride."

Since its opening in early July, 100 varied works of art have been on display at the Painted Bride Art Center in Old City and the Ellen Powell Tiberino Memorial Museum in Powelton Village, West Philadelphia. Featured among 38 artists are Joe Brenman, Salvador Gonzalez, Kathleen Ogilvie, Danny "Dan One" Polanco, Phil Sumpter, Nicholas Sperakis, Joe Tiberino and Ellen Powell Tiberino. The colorful, textural collection offers paintings (in oils, acrylics and watercolors), ink drawings, woodcarvings, metal works, prints, murals and mixed-media sculptures.

To celebrate the end of these simultaneous exhibits, which close this Sunday, the two galleries -- the Painted Bride, an open, airy space with high ceilings and loads of light, and the Tiberino Museum, an urban backyard garden, where wild grapevines and tree houses are an integral part of the outdoor art -- are offering a series of weekend events.

A First Friday reception will kick off at the Painted Bride. Jazz Stream Ensemble will provide live music, and artist and poet Paul Grillo will read from his latest works. On Saturday, the Tiberino Museum will feature Grillo, along with fellow poets Jerry Robinson, Bob Ocean and Joe Scuderi. Attendees are invited to participate in an open-mic session. On Sunday, DJ Joey Blanco will close the show at the Tiberino Museum with a neo-soul musical set.

“Community Callings,” through Aug. 4, reception, Fri., Aug. 2, 5-7 p.m., Painted Bride Art Center, 230 Vine St., 215-925-9914; Poetry Open Mic, Sat., Aug. 3, 1-6 p.m., closing reception, Sun., Aug. 4, 1:30-5:30 p.m., Ellen Powell Tiberino Museum, 3819 Hamilton St., 215-386-3784.
