Save the Pit Bulls

(Re: News, “Play Missy for Me,” Deborah Bolling, July 11, 2001)

After reading the article three times, I still fail to see the point in why it was published in the first place. Then it stuck me like a rabid pit bull: That article was written for the sole purpose of spreading anti-pit-bull sentiment, because we all know we need to keep the public informed about all the different ways pit bulls will endanger them, their loved ones and their furry family pets.

Cats are killed in this city every day, as well as dogs, squirrels, birds and people. Just this morning my little killer of a cat plucked a sparrow mid-flight. I doubt I would hear the City Paper in an uproar over Meesha's victory. Simply stated, he was doing what a cat does.

I could understand the cry of foul here if this dog was let loose to wander the streets. I could even understand if the owner stood there, leash in hand, while his dog mauled this cat, but those things did not happen -- in fact, he was the person who was bitten as he tried to save that cat. And for the record, I am pretty sure my sweet little cat would not hesitate to show me her teeth if I tried to pry that sparrow out of her mouth.

The owner of this dog was not wrong here; he had his dog on a leash while Missy was out in the open, and unrestrained. I am not saying that those who loved Missy dearly are flawed in their interpretation of the incident, but I question their ability to be impartial. Who is to say that the dog didn't feel threatened? I doubt that the dog was walking down the street and upon seeing that cat, thought to himself, "Hey, I can take her."

If you want to equate human emotions with those of animals, here is one for you: How about if we print in the paper every day how many white men beat their wives, or how many black men kill, or how many Asians are arrested for a DUI. Doesn't seem very fair, does it?

Unless you are going to report on what every breed is guilty of doing on the streets of Philadelphia every day, it seems kind of racist to single out the pit bull. (Gee, can I use that term for a dog?)

I could probably say a lot more on this subject, but I better go get my cat before the "save the sparrow" activists find him.

Oh Yeah?

(Re: Music, Picks of the Week, Sneaker Pimps, A.D. Amorosi, July 3, 2001)

Maybe A.D. Amorosi was too busy trying to come up with a witty, smug comment about Tricky (he failed) to notice that Kelli Dayton hasn't been with the Sneaker Pimps for years.

Better a "has-been" artist than a sycophant never-was writer.
