July 12-18, 2002 arcadia 2002 FIFA World Cup
(PS2, XBOX, GAMECUBE) Electronic Arts Rated E MSRP 49.95 The 2002 FIFA World Cup reached a feverish crescendo last week as Brazil defeated Germany in the finals to earn an unprecedented fifth world cup title. Unfortunately if you are one of the billions of soccer fans around the globe, four years is a long time to wait for the next World Cup competition. Well fret not, football fanatics, Electronic Arts has provided an outlet for your enthusiasm. 2002 FIFA World Cup is the only officially licensed game to use the FIFA World Cup marks, emblem, mascots and stadiums in Korea and Japan. All the star players from the tournament are included, along with their exceptional abilities. The stadium environments include team colors, flags, chants, pyrotechnics and a variety of daytime and nighttime matches. Two different game modes are offered, Friendly Match, the exhibition mode where you can choose the countries to face off, and Tournament Mode, which lets you take one country through the entire FIFA World Cup. The game is equally afoot across all three platforms, though visually the Xbox version seems to hesitate at times. The audio presentation is top notch, with Dolby Surround sound on the PS2 and GameCube versions, while the Xbox offers Dolby Digital sound. The musical score, performed by the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, is of cinematic quality. With the music accompanying the action on the field as you score a goal or draw a penalty kick, you actually feel like you are in the stadium with 60,000 people cheering and chanting. Additionally, because the game is DVD-based, it is packed with tons of bonus materiel. With all three console manufacturers announcing their plans to make online gaming available in the fall of this year, by the summer of 2006 FIFA World Cup should truly be an international competition. But for now 2002 FIFA World Cup comes as close to capturing the passion, pomp and circumstance more than any other game to date.
