July 12-18, 2002 music icepack
After ending last week’s Icepack with rumor -- a John Bolaris pec-shaving tip too ghastly to confirm -- I’d like to hear from you, my studio audience, as to the abzolutely dizgusting habits of celebs, local or national. E.g.: If Jimmy Buffett couldn’t hold his liquor at L’Hexagone (as rumored), I wanna know. If another weathercaster has scarier shaving info than just his (or her) chest, I wanna know.… Here’s one: It seems Moore College of Art & Design has opted out of honoring Martha Stewart this fall. Wha’ppened? She give the school a stock tip?… Talkin’ about school, Rolling Stone’s Anthony DeCurtis will teach some sorta rock-crit lit class at the University of Pennsylvania in September. Great: more know-nothing critics.… Tritone/Black Hole man Rick D. began booking the new second room of Mark Bee’s N. 3rd bo#206te this month. First up: techno-psychedelicists Fluzee, formerly known as God Lives Underwater, on July 13.… When Hedwig and the Angry Inch premieres at Painted Bride on July 12, it’ll do so with frequent Philadelphian David Colbert (baritone for the Voices of the Pops) in the title role.… With a local tribute to Jim Carroll under his belt, producer and Genus labeler Mike Villers is prepping Mama Kangaroos, a tribute to Captain Beefheart. Among those covering Don Van Vliet hits are Sweetie, Tintinabulus, Big Mess Orchestra, Geeta Dalal, Brother JT, Jen Hess and Elliot Levin, who recorded his bit at Indre Studios. Hess, meanwhile, takes over daily bar-mistress duties at Bar Noir and offers the salon as a daytime hang. David Carroll’s also opening Sunday eves to nubile DJs looking for rotating adventures in sound. Rumor has Deep C and DJ Skip on board.… Sunday, after leaving 1616 Locust, Tariq Trotter, ?uestlove, Scratch, James Poyser and Glenn Lewis hit Alma de Cuba’s Soul Travellin affair.… Going? Club gal Donna Coghlan left management of L’Erbolario, Tribecca and Mako’s to pursue a position with the Philadelphia Kixx indoor soccer team. (Not right-center.) Her replacement at Tribecca? Nancy D’Orazio. Hello. The infamous Dana, over at Kaleidoscope Cafe left the klatch to head to Club Shakers in Wildwood. “My people need to know,” said Dana in an e-mail, with a P.S., “f#ck Kaleidoscope.” Transit’s fave bartender Roxy parts with Philly for L.A., but before, the Sparacinos will throw her a bash at La Tazza with Imri, etc., DJing.… Coming: first Jay Schwartz’s Spanish gal pal DJ Silvia, who’ll spin at Secret Cinema-related stuff at L’Hexagone and Tritone, and Aussie lady DJ Snezana, toast of South Beach, who’ll bring her big-in-Japan show to Taj Mahal’s Casbah and 32° for its Planet Love Sundays.… Yell loud when Balcony booking mistress Lisa Christ Superstar opens for Detroit’s Wayne Kramer on July 11.… The cast of Aida hung at Tritone to celebrate star Jeremy Kushnier’s self-released eponymous CD. In other showtune news, Glenn the Shark Manko (now part of his name) is infesting waters with Bo Tree Entertainment stuff: The Situation (opening for Burning Brides on July 24 in Rittenhouse Square) is working on an EP at Geo Sound with George Manney and Pete Humphries on spec for Chris Schwartz’s Metropolitan Studios. Singer/songwriter Griffin House relocated to Philly to record under Phil Nicolo on an EP. Stay late.… Also releasing: Aqualounge’s Dev79, who’ll do bits of his Sonicterror-label 7-inch live on July 17, with NYC’s illbient DJ Olive on board.… Rufflady Helen Little’s throwing an all-ages “Philly Rockfest” at Pontiac on July 11 at 3 p.m., with 13Even, Malvado, HZ and more.… Why didn’t I ask Cinderella’s Tom Keifer about a long-ago rumored close relationship with guitarist Barry Benedetta? Dag.… Philly’s Flag of Democracy will lead a hardcore headcharge through Funrama (4103 Baltimore Ave.) on July 12.… Dark peeps from Pittsburgh cross Philadelphia borders in the guise of Circuits of Steel, traveling Steeltown electronic experimentalists whose two-CD set of the same name is a sturdy savage package of electro, glitchcore plunderphonic (think John Oswald) and IDM. The Rotunda hosts Xanopticon, My Boyfriend the Pilot, Manherringbone and more on July 13.… While we’ve been celebrating a teeny-tiny after-hour rebirth at the 238 Lounge on Market Street, Tommy Up’s been planning some Mummer-y after-hour stuff himself with Adrock and Double-A in tow. I won’t say where. What I will say is happy b-day to Up, who stayed up late at Tribecca. Get some sleep.
