Shirley Clarke¹s documentary-fiction film, based on an off-Broadway play about a group of junkies living in a run-down apartment, featuring hard-bop jazz performances by Freddie Redd and Jackie McLean, among others. Thelonious Monk: Straight, No Chaser (1989, U.S., 90 min.) Documentary about the legendary jazz pianist and composer, tracing his studio and stage work with footage of interviews and performances from 1968. The story of Ornette Coleman, David Izenson and Charles Moffett recording the soundtrack for a theater project in Paris in 1966. Mingus (1968, U.S., 54 min.) Documentary about bassist-composer Charles Mingus, filmed on the day he was to be evicted from his apartment and filled with the musician¹s musings on politics, racism, family, education and sex, as well as live performances and scenes with his young daughter. Spaceways (1974, U.S. 18 min.) and Sun Ra Arkestra Private Films (48 min. total) Avant-garde musicians Sun Ra Arkestra caught on film, first in an Ed English documentary, and then in various performances from the ¹60s and ¹70s in Egypt, Philadelphia and other locations. Philadelphia filmmaker Michael Dennis tells the story of MC Breeze, the West Philadelphia-born and raised rapper who was the first to have his record banned from the radio, the first MC to actually sing and one of the first to release a rap record independently. Features interviews with other Philly rap stars such as Jazzy Jeff, Schoolly D, The Roots' ?uestlove and others, and early footage of the city rap scene. A gangster breaks out of prison and into the home of a psychologist, holding him and his family hostage. The psychologist uses hypnosis on the criminal to analyze his disorder (the under-hypnosis sequences are flashbacks filmed using negative photography).
