Jorma Kaukonen

Without Jorma Kaukonen's deep immersion in fingerpicked blues informing the lead guitar lines, would we ever have heard Jefferson Airplane? Even while making rock history Kaukonen never gave up acoustic picking. His side band, Hot Tuna, let him play the tunes he loved, and they still do 30 years later. As you read this, his new CD, Blue Country Heart (Columbia), should just be hitting the stores with some of his best tracks ever. Think back to the '30s. Yes, it was O Brother time, but think of the funkier stuff like Jimmie Rodgers and the Delmore Brothers. Jerry Douglas adds exquisite resonator guitar growl on most tracks and Sam Bush's new grass mandolin takes the high road. These two are not on tour with Kaukonen, but two excellent stand-ins, Cindie Cashdollar (Asleep at the Wheel) and Barry Mitterhoff (Skyline, Silk City) will help Kaukonen bring these tracks to life.

Jorma Kaukonen & Blue Country, Fri., June 14, 7:30 and 10 p.m., $25, Painted Bride Arts Center, 230 Vine St., 215-925-9914 or www.paintedbride.org.
