May 23-29, 2002 artpicks He Held Me Grand
TheaterWhat would you do if relatives you had never met before invaded your dreams? For Jesse, the young man at the center of People's Light and Theatre Co.'s latest show, He Held Me Grand, the answer is simple: He runs to his long-lost grandmother's house at 4 in the morning to get some answers. In He Held Me Grand, the story of one family's history is told through their reunion in Jesse's grandmother's Indianapolis home. In the span of one day his grandmother and her two sisters, along with their brother, talk about different events they, as well as other family members, experienced over the last century. Dead ancestors watch the conversation unfold and reenact flashbacks. Even though most lessons come from the past, Jesse contributes by talking about the future. Creator James Still wanted to capture a range of reflections and emotions shared by family members that enable them not only to reflect about life, but also link generations together. The stories shared are about war, race and family as well as dreams and romance. All of the family’s tales are based on those Still heard in intergenerational workshops he held in Philadelphia and Indianapolis. Through June 16, $24-$35, People’s Light and Theatre Co., 39 Conestoga Rd., Malvern, 610-644-3500.
