May 23-29, 2002 artpicks Rocking the Boat
TheaterOnce again, Mum Puppettheatre has taken on the task of changing the way people view puppetry. In their latest production, Rocking the Boat, Vietnamese water puppetry is used to create a brilliant setting where water not only manipulates the images of different seasons, but also gives symbolic meaning to the underlining story. Creator and director Robert Smythe uses a wordless style and this unique set to tell the story of conjoined twins given the opportunity to be separated. While basing this show on true accounts of conjoined twins (including the much publicized and debated separation of Amy and Angela Lakeburg at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia in 1993), the story continues after the operation with only one twin surviving. The play focuses on her struggle to cope with her haunting past and worrisome future. Through June 15, $12-$24, Mum Puppettheatre, 115 Arch St., 215-925-7686.
