May 16-22, 2002 musicpicks Bill Bruford's Earthworks
JazzBest known as the prog-rhythm man behind King Crimson and Yes, drummer Bill Bruford also totes a resumé cluttered with jazz cred. In the '80s he led a group featuring guitarist Allan Holdsworth; in the '90s he founded Earthworks, which brought to light the talents of such heavies as Tim Garland and Django Bates. This latter ensemble has just released its ninth album, the live Footloose and Fancy Free (Discipline Global Mobile). Recorded in London's Pizza Express Jazz Club last summer, the two-disc set captures a buoyant acoustic quartet in full bloom; they're as comfortable polishing crystalline ballads as they are steamrolling through a muscular 11/8 groove. Altogether their sound calls to mind the '80s acoustic-fusion unit Steps, and not just because tenor saxophonist Patrick Clahar digs his Mike Brecker; Bruford's writing and playing both reflect a familiar clarity of tone. And this, make no mistake, is a good thing. Mon., May 20, 8 p.m., $22-$24, Theater of Living Arts, 334 South St., 215-922-1011, www.electricfactory.com.
