May 16-22, 2002 artpicks Mixed Media
Dance/ArtPhiladelphia's premiere post-classical new music ensemble will try a new experiment by marrying its own haunting arrangements with other art forms. For "Eye Series" -- three concerts held at the Institute of Contemporary Art in connection with individual exhibits -- Rel‰che Ensemble will perform Avant Pop, composer David Lang's arrangement of Steppenwolf's "Born to be Wild" and John Cage's 1956 "Radio Music" for the futurist theatrics of Space 1026's Scratch Off the Serial. A few days later, Rel‰che takes on the Ailey-esque vision of Pennsylvania Ballet dancer Meredith Rainey and Manhattan avant-accordionist Guy Klucevsek with Mixed Company, four dance premieres. This "pilot" collaboration of interdisciplinary arts started in August 2001 with Rainey and Rel‰che building upon Klucevsek's piecemeal delivery of his music, a mix of traditional accordion fare and the bizarre that's brought his tender tones to the likes of John Zorn and Laurie Anderson. Klucevsek will join with Rel‰che's beautiful electronica and Rainey's choreography. Eye Music III: Avant Pop, Thu., May 16, 7:30 p.m., $9-$20, Institute of Contemporary Art, 36th and Sansom St.; Mixed Company, Tue.–Thu., May 21-23, 8 p.m., $17-$20, University of the Arts Dance Theater, 1512 Spruce St., 215-569-9700.
