Martha Comes Alive

Dance

Richard Move gets on stage wearing dresses and makeup, yet he's hardly an everyday female impersonator. He's a one-of-a-kind playing another one-of-a-kind: that grand diva of dance, Martha Graham. Never mind that he's 6-foot-4 while Graham was 5 feet tall; the guy embodies his subject hook, line and sinker. Move has carefully studied Graham's mannerisms in dance, speech and gesture, and he so adroitly re-creates them that it's as if she's come back for an encore. He even quotes her verbatim, whipping out famous bon mots like "dress the women and undress the men" or "I stand before you in sweet terror, and joyous despair and divine turbulence." The act, funny and profound, is a wicked satire that's also a loving homage. Move has toured his Martha shtick around the U.S. and Europe to much acclaim. Along the way he's scored two New York Dance and Performance Awards (better known as a "Bessie"). He's even done the diva bit in Philadelphia before, as an emcee for Shut Up and Dance back in 2000. Move was an unqualified hit then, and we may expect the same with "Martha @ the Bride," where he dishes out monologues between performances by his own ensemble, known as The Company, plus local dance artists Clyde Evans Jr., Jeanne Ruddy, Paule Turner and Ron Wood.

“Martha @ the Bride,” Thu.–Sat., May 9-11, 8 p.m., $20, The Painted Bride Art Center, 230 Vine St., 215-925-9914, www.paintedbride.org.
