The Butchies

Rock/Pop

When North Carolina's indie sensation The Butchies yell, "Action! Action!" in the song "i hate.com," they could be asserting their motto. On the trio's third album, Three (Mr. Lady), the band's agenda is never far from the song's surface. From activism anthems to screeds on gender and sexual politics, the all-lady, Kaia Wilson-led outfit has no problem being a bit direct with its ideas or its punk-propelled shimmy rock. Which isn't to say they don't have their mysterious side. On "For Kay" Wilson meditates on "the women being killed, the women being lost" and then wonders aloud "take the aliens home, how'd we end up here anyway?" In a corporate pop atmosphere where the closest thing to a stance is a grab o' the crotch, I'll take feminist/UFO theoreticals any day of the week.

Thu., April 18, 6 p.m., $8, all ages, with Kimya Dawson (of the Moldy Peaches) and the Walkie Talkies, The Fire, 412 W. Girard Ave, 267-671-9298.
