Fabulous Thunderbirds

Rock/pop

Try to remember: pre-car-ad anthem popularity ("Tuff Enough") and erstwhile videos wherein guys with Jeff caps get all the babes (was that ever a reality?!). The Fabulous Thunderbirds were the sound of Austin before it had a music conference. In fact, what the Grateful Dead were to the Hell's Angels in the '60s, the Fab T-Birds were to Antone's -- the ugliest blues and booze bar in Austin before alterna-kids turned it into a Hard Rock with antlers -- in the '70s. Before brother Stevie Ray found the golden hour between Albert King and Jimi Hendrix, guitarist Jimmy Vaughn was dirt-ball boogying his way through raunchy roadhouse, snakeskin blues and rhythm with singer-harpist Kim Wilson busting a gut behind him. Pay some respect. Don't request that stupid hit unless you'd like to get that new car smell from me running your ass over.

Sat., April 20, $20–$23, North by Northwest, 7165 Germantown Ave., 215-248-1000.
