April 18-24, 2002 musicpicks CP Music Awards
All GenresThey're making me wear a suit. Usually reserved for funerals, weddings and Christmas, my black graduation suit will have to be dusted off and thrown in the dryer (to get the wrinkles out, for lack of an iron), because it's City Paper Music Awards time and word is it's a semi-formal event. Are you ready to read a bunch of names? Hosted by Tariq Trotter (of The Roots) and Marilyn Russell (the Y100 DJ), the evening should be an entertaining cavalcade of local stars. Up for awards, and presumably present to receive them, are: Bilal, Jaguar (who's nominated for best R&B/soul performer and best live act), Marah, Jafar Barron, Nancy Falkow (up for best folk performer; here's hoping the Music Awards' version of Susan Lucci finally brings one home this year), Atom and His Package, Lefty's Deceiver -- the list goes on. Also expect live performances, scattered Grammy-style throughout the ceremony, by other nominated artists: Tyrone Tribbett and his enormous gospel choir, world funk band Animus, soulmates Kindred and ass-kicking rockers the Burning Brides. Celebrity presenters include Toni Yates and Alison Harmelin (WB news people), James Poyser, Eric Bazilian and Rob Hyman (of The Hooters), A.D. Amorosi (I'm dying to meet him) and me. For all this, I will wear a suit at the Troc. Thu., April 18, reception 7 p.m., ceremony 8:30 p.m., after-party with Pitch Control winners DJ Razor Ramone and DJ Lucas Rivera upstairs in the Balcony, semi-formal attire, $12.50 (a portion of proceeds benefit Settlement Music School), The Trocadero, 10th and Arch sts., tickets available through Ticketmaster, 215-336-2000, or at the Troc.
