Herbie Hancock/ Dianne Reeves

Jazz

"Crossover" isn't exactly a happy word in the jazz lexicon, but there are a few artists who have managed to make it work. Among them: singer Dianne Reeves, who just won her second Grammy (for The Calling, on Blue Note), and keyboardist Herbie Hancock, whose Future2Future (Transparent) courts ambient/techno/drum and bass. Of course, Hancock is the veteran in this regard (remember "Rockit"?), and his portion of the show -- featuring abstract visuals and "surround sound" -- may redeem material that seemed lackluster on disc. The same could be true of Reeves, who never sounds better than when fronting a band onstage.
