Border Lines: Chinatown

10th and Arch Streets.

Another in an occasional series on the look and texture of Philadelphia neighborhoods.

photography by Kass Mencher

Where: Filbert Street to Callowhill Street, 12th Street to 8th Street.

Who: Asian Americans and Asian immigrants, restaurant owners and food service employees, food distributors, textile workers/manufacturers.

What It Looks Like: A densely packed area of late 19th-century rowhomes, markets and restaurants mixed with modern housing communities with lots of green space, such as Hing Wah Yuen at 9th and Callowhill Streets. Notable landmark: The 10th Street Arch, a colorful gateway to the neighborhood.

Why It’s a Good Place to Live: "We are a neighborhood of families, working people, small businesses, churches and community institutions, not just tourist stops." —Sign in the window at Asian Americans United, 913 Arch St.
