Leon Parker

Leon Parker has been turning heads lately, and for good reason — the multi-percussionist is perfecting his own brand of Afro-Cuban-influenced jazz percussion. His second solo effort, Belief (Columbia), features a concept similar to his first solo release: a streetwise and innovative take on the jazz canon experimenting with African hand drums, shakers and bells. Parker's transition seems effortless, a reflection of his belief that different grooves stem from the same musical traditions; it's exciting to think of what direction his quintet will take the music next.

Thurs., Oct. 3, 7 & 9:30p.m., $15, Blue Moon Jazz Cafe & Restaurant, 4th St. between Market & Chestnut, 413-2272.
