MC Lyte
Bad As I Wanna B (Elektra).
MC Lyte, one of hip-hop's original feminists, is back, and better than ever. Previously criticized for her b-girl attitude, she now has a more mature image at the age of 25. Her rhymes still have that "this is what I want, give it to me now" flavor, but with the help of Mr. Hitmaker, producer Jermaine Dupri (Kris Kross, Xscape, Da Brat), Lyte pulls them off nicely. Most of the tracks are minimalist, moderate tempo numbers with just Lyte rapping on both the lead and the chorus.
While all of Lyte's rhymes are stories about what she wants from a man or what he can or cannot do, in this age of Foxy Brown and Lil' Kim, she may finally be received minus all the previous flack. Bad As I Wanna B is not your party-anthem, everybody-get-hyped album. But if your looking for laid back hip-hop tracks and classic MC Lyte flow, she shows that she can be as bad as she wants to b.
