Not since the likes of voodoo melodicist Albert Ayler, mathemeticulous avant-gardist Anthony Braxton or sour-and-sweet Clifford Jordan has America heard improv sax as free-flowing as that of Wally Shoup. Shoups reeds move with the wack balance of abstract action painting, bending and tearing all thats placed before him. Percussionist Toshi Makihara, his partner for this evening in colorful chance-fueled music, is a perfect match, having played glue to the rubbery likes of Eugene Chadbourne, John Zorn and William Parker, as well as having formed Phillys new music consortium IMP. The last time these two met up with Sonic Youths Thurston Moore in tow, guitar set to stun the result was the trio jumping on "Hurricane Floyd." But Shoup/Makihara dont need no youth to make a tornado. Come and watch the winds blow.
