One stellar (if sick) number, "Rock Star," might be about a number of dead rock stars (most likely the late Cobain). Hoffman intones, "They put a shrine for you in Rolling Stone. And sixteen servants weeping at your throne. And I love you ten times more dead than alive. I want to hold you kid and make love to your wife." In telling, media-born-and-bred style she ends the song by quoting, "Fame, I'm gonna live forever."
Formerly a bass player with the folky September 67, you might find a hint of PJ Harvey's bravado, Courtney Love's sneer or Liz Phair's flair for sharp description in Hoffman's magical sound. But watch her, she's already poised to become a big name herself.
