COLD FEVER

In Icelandic director Fridrik Fridriksson's latest, a Japanese businessman travels to (and through) Iceland to perform final rites for his parents who died there. It's both touching and comic, and Masatoshi Nagase (Mystery Train) carries off his central role with quizzical charm. Unfortunately, the plot is so episodic and clich-ridden that it fails to gel into the deep emotional statement attempted at its end. Fridriksson does continue to find inventive ways to showcase Iceland's beauty and a couple of moments are truly breathtaking. This (and the wry portrayal of Americans) may succeed in endearing him to U.S. audiences; it is not, however, enough to make Cold Fever a great film.
