The late Raymond Carvers minimalist short stories tales of lovers, drinkers and families trying to face their turbulent lives pack an oft-shocking emotional wallop. For proof, see "Thomas Hirschhorn: Altar to Raymond Carver" at Moore College of Art and Design. Hirschhorn, a French-Swiss artist, will place the shrine on the outside wall of Moores Goldie Paley Gallery on 20th Street, off Logan Square. The opening reception on Mardi Gras, March 7, will feature a performance by Odean Pope and his Dixieland Band and "No heroics, please," a conversation between Hirschhorn and Douglas Fogle, of the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. Other Carver-related events include a series of readings of works by local writers inspired by Carver (and a handful of his own) titled "What We Talk About When Talk About Love," and daily screenings of what introduced many to Carvers works, Robert Altmans 1993 film Short Cuts.
