naked city
This week is an A/V lover’s dream, with producers, film guys and techies taking up more room in my column than spawts jackets in my closet. Mr. Edan Cohen of Soundgun Studios has Mr. Paul Edelman, of such fine ensembles as The Boxcars and Naked Omaha, in studio doing a full-length solo LP for the Soundgun label, on which Mike Brenner (who just left town with deservedly hyped Record Cellar acts John Train and Frog Holler for a seven-day "Hookers and Hemp Tour" of Holland) can be heard dripping those weepy pedal steel tears. Cohen is also producing West Philly’s smart hip-hop duo Wreck & Devine, also for his label. And for things not on his label, Jim, Jennie& The Pinepeeps cut their bluegrass-blue new CD at Soundgun for April release on Overcoat Records, and Secretly Canadian act Songs:Ohia are readying their Soundgun-done full-length for March. But you knew that. Don’t you listen? Plus, Cohen’s doing a lounge thing in April with Cynthia Mason and a Mr. Bob Philips, a sculptor I went to school with before they invented ballpoint.…
"What the hell is a Jane Anchor?" asks ex-Sonny Sixkiller/current Dirty Triplets guitarist/singer Kara Lafty before sending me the Jane’s hard-hooky, melancholy metal four-song debut with bassist Billy Warburton. I don’t know. But I like. And I’d like you to like it at the Khyber, Feb. 22.…
Tony Goldman, Guillermo Pernot and the Playground Maps boys get together Jan. 26-27 to pre-open the retro-modernist, très-affordable Trust.…
Get to Verbal Essences, Tiffany Bacon’s Monday open-mic jam at Ms. Tootsie’s, now (or the next available Monday). If you can’t handle the soul, have a slice of sweet potato pie. It’s the only thing better than the funk.…
The Salon series of adventurous, quiet musical events (817 N. Second St., No. 2) hosts "Resurrection of Blind Joe Death," Feb. 24, 8 p.m., to honor acoustic-avant-Americana-avatar John Fahey’s 63rd b-day. To celebrate the late guitarist, David Pearson (owner of Hey Dave at Eighth and Bainbridge), Larry Brown (of Wheatstone Bridge), Kevin Barker and Jack Rose will fingerpluck with bliss.…
Diesel Jeans opened its 1507 Walnut doors and skybox viewing area with a literal bang as Nicole Cashman and Peltz Boxing brought in North Philly’s Charles "The Hatchet" Brewer and Camden’s Prince Badi Ajamu to fight over tea-stained denims in an actual center-stage ring, concession girls and all.…
Tim Motzer, Elliot Levin, "Low B" Meehan, and Mark Boyce— that’s Fractal Ark to you — take on Khyber Feb. 23.…
Fox 29’s sartorial sort Mike Jerrick will host the promised-to-be-thrilling (anything but last year’s snore-athon) Addy Awards dedicated to/for local ad and graphics bizzers, Feb. 28 at Zellerbach Theatre. Dress up.…
Combat Zone Wrestling’s Cage of Death III, filmed at Viking Hall (a.k.a. the ECW Arena) in Philly is now available as a massive five-hour, two-video set. Speaking of wrestling, Philly’s Bloodhound Gang will not release its home video, One Fierce Beer Run (Geffen) until everyone who showed their tits or sucked B-hound dick signs a consent waver. If you’re one of the 35 peeps they’re looking for, be a sport. Still photos of MIAs are on the group’s website, www.bloodhoundgang.com. This should be fun.…
Don’t blame Indre engineer Michael Comstock, he only mixed and recorded those horrible PA Lottery commercials with Ray Charles singing out of tune. (Indre’s also doing those cool NPR Justice Talking shows.)…
It’s a meeting of the power-chord lawyers: After Brad Rubens Esq.’s sleek-rocking Silvertide play TLA Feb. 23 (with Dave Pittenger Band ), the Simon Rosen Esq.-managed rock terrorists Gypsy Sullivan (fresh outta Wilmington) pair off with Silvertide at Abilene on March 7. Gypsy plays Abilene’s juke joint alone Feb. 24 and March 15. Gentlemen, rev your writs! Another legally eagle-y event sees Larry Cohen, the boys of Premiere and Ms. Cashman hosting a Rendell for Governor fundraiser Feb. 21 at Marathon Grill Commerce Square, before heading to CoJax pal Michael Jackson’s LocalMotive Bash bash for John Stephens and Soul Samba.…
Revealed: NBA Weekend’s All-Stars. Some were cheap, some were gay, some were liars. Rumor has it P. Diddy stiffed Egypt for nearly $6,000, buying up shots and champagnes without paying or tipping, all the while flashing wads o’ cash from atop the bar. Then there was the Stevie Wonder impersonator (O.J. in a weave-wig?) calling several restaubars, alerting them to his oncoming visit. (Hey, the woman running the Converse party believed it!) Then there’s the story of a handful of NBA players and managers who I hear showed up swishily to several gay clubs along 13th Street (Woody’s, 2-4) tipping short-short-wearing dancers, um, handsomely. Yes, heteros go to gay clubs. ( I certainly do.) But never to slam-dunk the way these ballers did to a dancer I know. More soon?…
Happy anniversary to Dan Contarino’s Shaft Friday, which celebrated five years at Shampoo, and to Philadelphia Experiment’s collective of house heads who party for the third one, Feb. 22 at Silk City.
