City Paper’s guide to getting hitched.

Dum-dum dum-dum … It’s interesting how the same four sounds can be sung as a joyful wedding processional and as the ominous, a-shark-is-about-to-bite-your-ass theme music from Jaws. Sort of like the ups and downs of planning a wedding. The details and the decisions seem like they will surely be the death of everyone involved, but the end result is (hopefully) blissful.

Each year City Paper brings you a guide to help you through the process and make your wedding truly one of a kind. This year we’re focusing on vintage — we give you tips on making your wedding both unique and historical by weaving pieces of the past into your ceremony. Three brave, real local women (no obnoxiously waifish models here) headed out to Antiquarian’s Delight, a space packed to the gills with vintage goodies, to try on gowns, hats, glasses, anything they’d let us get our hands on. Julian, youth-service program coordinator at Pendle Hill, a local Quaker community; Christine, a second-grade teacher (and engaged herself); and Laura, a secretary at Penn (and the wife of our interim managing editor, Frank Lewis), got all dolled up with some help from Marco, Jennifer and Sean at Salon South and then went to town in Antiquarian’s. Check out the photos.

A.D. Amorosi looks at wedding locations, both fantastical and more plausible (but still unique), here. CP Listings Editor Juliet Fletcher looks into some rowdy bachelor-party traditions from around the world here. After all of that debauchery, check out the I Do Foundation, a new group dedicated to helping couples raise money for charity as wedding gifts. (No, you really don’t need another crock pot.)

Whether you go for a dress from another era, a tradition from another country, a location that’s out of this world or a gift that can make a difference, use this guide to help put a unique spin on your nuptials. With CP as your guide, it’s finally safe to get back in the wedding-planning waters.
