Hello, lamb belly.
According to the anniversary experts at Hallmark a second anniversary is celebrated with gifts of either cotton, traditionally, or china if you're going modern. The second is more apt if you're Kevin Sbraga and your celebrating year two of your eponymous Broad Street restaurant (440 South Broad St.). In honor of two years in the biz Sbraga and company are hosting a series of greatest hits chefs counter tasting for the month of October.
We headed in last night to check out the tasting and we've got to say, there are some seriously memorable plates on the menu. The meal starts with a creamy celery flan topped with compressed celery and moves on to Sbraga classics like a totally over the top foie gras soup with bright lemongrass to cut the richness. Squid ink bucatini with pork belly and soft-poached and a mille-feuille eggplant terrine with black garlic tapenade were stunners but the most mind blowing plate of the evening was a play on fish and chips that had Sbraga written all over it - think perfectly fried nugget of flaky white fish served with a single, beautifully fried rectangle of potato and a curry tarter sauce that brings the whole dish together and leaves you wanting at last five more bites. Oh, and dessert? A lovely deconstructed tiramisu.
The menu goes for $75 a person, a pretty incredible price for seven pristine courses. And there's a spot on beverage pairing for $50 courtesy of Sbraga GM Ben Fileccia that includes a lovely selection of beer, wine and cocktails that compliment the menu perfectly. Reservations for the anniversary menu are very limited and at the chefs counter only (a big bonus since you get to watch Sbraga and his crew in action all night long) so call and reserve your spot (215-735-1913), seriously.
