Long vacant buildings on the 5000 block of Baltimore Avenue
Due to a strange series of circumstances, I've written three feature-length articles that focused on the blighted 5000 and 5100 block of Baltimore Avenue over the last year and a half, all related to land-use issues. And I'm hardly alone.
I have rarely seen so much ink spilled over one little block or so many dysfunctional interests converging on one reasonably unremarkable geographic area. Hopefully, a meeting tonight, hosted by the civic group Cedar Park Neighbors, will address some of the interference that has kept this block vacant and decaying despite the efforts numerous well-intentioned people.
The meeting will address a controversial plan to expand a half-vacant medical center owned by a church, how the block fits into the city's development plan, and solicit community input on more desirable use of the ample city-owned land in the vicinity.
The public meeting begins around 6:30 p.m. tonight at the People's Baptist Temple, 5039 Baltimore Ave.
