On Friday I headed out to the wonderful world of Cherry Hill to pick up party supplies for Saturday's birthday festivities. A trip to Wegmans for plastic bottle booze and pizza and chips and dip supplies was followed by dinner at The Cheesecake Factory. The gin, melon and St. Germain cocktails were remarkably tasty and the chicken enchilada, well, it was giant.—CR
Friday we hopped up to Horsham for the rehearsal for the nuptials of C's college pals. The dinner that followed was not so much a dinner as a pig roast, with a whole suckling hog supplied by Deke's Bar-B-Que in Manayunk. Deke reached into the pig with gloved hands, pulling out fistfuls of shoulder and butt and for annoying food nerds who requested (read: this guy), cheek and belly. He mounded the meat on a Martin's bun, sprinkled it with his magic dust and added a squirt of West Carolina tomato-and-vinegar sauce. I ate one in five second flat, then got back in line for seconds. My kind of rehearsal.—AE
Woke up relatively early on Saturday to run up to Yards for a keg of Pennsylvania Pale Ale and over to Potito's in South Philly to pick up a birthday cake. Back at party central I started on trays of Jello shots (gin gimlet, bourbon and ginger ale and Jagermeister), mixed up homemade versions of spinach and artichoke and sour cream and onion dips and stretched out three sheet-pan pizzas topped with cherry tomatoes, sausage and mozzarella. Like any good host I didn't manage to eat anything and somehow we never made it to the cake but the keg and Jello shots were gone before I knew it.—CR
Saturday was the wedding, and after a rustic outdoor ceremony--the rain held off, thank God--we headed into a lantern-lite tent for the reception. There was more pork (not Deke's this time), Philly Pretzel Factory soft pretzels, kegs of Long Trail and Lager and a tower of Funfetti cupcakes, the only kind of cupcake worth eating.—AE
On Sunday I woke up to a house that looked like there was some sort of red Solo cup explosion. After a brief clean up session I made a round of hangover-helping dark and stormies for my out of town guests before heading over to Cantina for restorative pitchers of Brunch Punch and nachos and various other plates of morning after Tex-Mex. After making sure that everyone was en route to their respective trains and buses, I stopped by the 13th Street Fall Fest for a few beers, home for some couch time and then over to Fountain Porter for my favorite burger.—CR
