Notes from the Weekend is a feature that sees the members of Team Meal Ticket compiling all the food/drink highlights uncovered during prime eatin' time, Friday to Sunday. Adam took the weekend off so it's just caroline chiming in this week. We'd love to hear all about YOUR weekend eating adventures in the comments. Go for it! The weekend kicked off a little early with a late lunch at Oyster House. I went with the totally-bizarre-only-in-Philly combo of fried oysters and chicken salad plus a glass of house white. Later that evening we braved the weather and headed to a late dinner at Rosa Blanca. Seriously, this place is awesome - coriander spiced mojitos, ham croquettes, a mojo-marinated skirt steak, black beans and rice and a few slices of avocado. After dinner we headed to The Dolphin for a few beers before calling it a night.—CR
On Saturday I headed to Hymie's Delicatessen in Merion for lunch/research. It'd been years since I ate here and didn't remember the portion sizes being so giant or, honestly, the food being so good. I started with the smaller (read hubcap-sized) bowl of Mish Mash soup (that'd be chicken noodle soup with rice, a matzo ball and kreplach i.e. Jewish dumplings). I barely made a dent in it. Feeling particularly indecisive, I went with a trio of deli sliders, mini turkey, roast beef and corned beef sandwiches on cocktail rye. In retrospect, these might have been the smallest thing on the men. They were still giant.—CR
After some serious couch time, a late night buffalo wing craving happened and we did the unthinkable - ordering takeout from Chickie's & Pete's during the game. The place was crazy but the wings were awesome.—CR
More deli research on Sunday, this time to Famous 4th Street for a cheese blintze and a whitefish salad and cream cheese on a sesame bagel. Oh and a Cel-Ray Dr. Brown's, obviously. A meeting at The South Philly Tap Room turned into all night drinks (fig punch! Lagunitas Hairy Eyeball!) at SPTR where their staff and the Sardine Bar's staff just so happened to be having their annual holiday party. It took some serious self control to get out of there before last call.—CR
