The Story: The folks at Urban Blazers invited me along for a hike with kids from Hank Gathers Rec Center in Northwest Philadelphia. When the program started four years ago, the kids that went on hikes from Gathers were mostly boys. Now, most of the youth at the heart of the program are girls. They lead the trails, climb trees, identify weeds and poison ivy and forage for edibles, all while not giving a second thought about the mud on their shoes.
